Meet Suzy, our 1992 Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ80 overlanding hero

We bought Suzy from a Frenchman in February 2016, and prepped her for our overlanding adventure that’d start in November 2017. The first time Sarah and I actually got to drive it together, was to arrive at our wedding ceremony 😀

But before getting there, our Suzy needed some specific modifications for overlanding the America’s. A Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ80 is already quite the offroader coming out of the factory, and the two previous owners also modified her slightly.

Original 1992 Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ80

  • 4.2L 6 in line Turbo Diesel (1-HDT aka “the greatest engine of all times”)
  • Automatic 4-speed transmission + low/high gear transfer case
  • 3 original Toyota locking diffs
  • Towbar
  • Extra transmission oil cooler
  • lElectrical sunroof
  • 7 seats
  • Grey interior
  • Central lock
  • Electrical windows & mirrors

This is a tour of the cockpit and how a 25 year old car starts:

Extra equipment already installed when I bought it

  • Kaymar rear bumper with 2 spare wheels
  • Second fuel tank (+/- 200L extra)
  • Rhino Rack roof bars
  • Skitplates for nose, transfer case and second fuel tank
  • Second diesel filter
  • Air-conditioning
  • Side exhaust

Here’s what we added and/or replaced:

Mechanical stuff

  • new OME springs and shocks all around. 600kg pre-load in the back, 50kg pre-load in the front, 2″ lift
  • new OME steering damper
  • 6 new 16″ steel wheels (yes, we have two spare wheels)
  • 6 new Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx 285/75/R16 tires
  • total revision of front hubs and new wheel bearings all around
  • upgrade to post ’92 front disc brake calipers (bigger size, more braking power)
  • new high performance brake disks and pads
  • replacing of all brake lines by originals (necessary to get past the Belgian Technical Control)
  • revision of injectors + injector pump and replacing timing belt
  • new starting batteries
  • 95% black tint of all windows behind the drivers compartment
  • change of all fluids, including maintenance airco unit.

Here’s a little tour of the under carriage of our Suzy:

Overlanding & camping stuff

  • Pioneer MVH-380BT radio unit + 4 x Pioneer AT-series speakers (yes, I’m putting these on top of my list, such a sweet sound)
  • Koala Creek roof top tent + all around canvas
  • Longroad 2mx2m awning + side canvas
  • ARB 55L fridge + Frontrunner fridge slider
  • National Luna Battery pack + 55Ah battery
  • 220V convertor + 2 sockets both front and back
  • 2xUSB + cigarette lighter socket + volt meter both in front and back
  • LED-lights in back compartment and tailgate
  • sturdy foldable table and two great chairs
  • we also re-arranged the trunk a bit:
    • big drawer with all our cooking equipment
    • big top slider for 2 extra boxes with stuff we often use
    • covers for the wheel arches, providing room for the chairs and the table on the left side, and all the electrical equipment on the right side
    • 9 sturdy boxes for all our stuff (there’s a lot of it!)

Below you’ll find a couple of video’s:

Setting up our RTT

Folding at all up again

How we organised our cargo space

The electrical system

4×4 & recovery equipment

  • Front bull bar
  • 10.000 pounds winch with synthetic rope
  • Compressor
  • 2x sand plates
  • Stretchable towing rope
  • ARB tire repair kit
  • Foldable shovel

The result is a great overlanding Land Cruiser that will get you anywhere! Special cudo’s for the OME shocks and springs that give our 3 ton Land Cruiser a pleasure to drive both on unpaved, high speed highways and curling mountain roads.

Once on the road, I must say we are very happy with the equipment we installed. The ride is fantastic with the OME shocks and springs, the brakes have decent performance to stop the 3ton+ Land Cruiser, the engine can handle all challenges we threw at it – even above 5000m altitude above sea level – and is running super smoothly. The roof top tent is really spacious and our cooking stuff hasn’t let us down once.

The only problem we encountered were the AT3 Discoverer from Cooper tires we had at the beginning: we lost 3 of them in the first 10.000 km. The verdict was clear: not suited for the Suzy’s weight nor the challenging roads in SA. The result: 6 brand new Cooper Discoverer STMAXX 285/75/R16’s: proper offroad tires for light trucks. Not only did the slightly bigger size reduce the fuel consumption, they haven’t failed us once so far, give excellent grip in all sorts of weather and underground and look bad ass 😉

For Sale

We’re in Belize at the moment (July 26th 2017) with roughly 363.000 kms (~ 225k miles) on the clock. We’ll probably add about 5000 km (~3000 miles) more before the end of the trip in Southern USA. As Antwerp – our home city in Belgium – banned cars like Suzy due to emissions out of the city AND it doesn’t really make sense to drive an offroad monster like her on Belgian roads, we’d like to sell her in the USA.

If you’d like some more info, here’s our add and for all price inquieries, drop us a message via the contact form. Is this the beginning of your dream? It certainly was (and still is!) ours 😉

    Beste Sarah en Dimitri,
Ik heb net jullie blog ontdekt door een artikel in de krant.
Net jullie verhaal gelezen over Suzy…

70 of 80 serie? Bestemmingen die we best helemaal bovenaan onze Europese wishlist plaatsen? 😉

        Hola Dimitri,
        Geert.

Dear Sarah and Dimitri, impressive adventure, blog and pictures! What camera are you using in fact to nail this down so beautifully? Thanks!

      Hey Karla,

      Thanks for the compliment 😉
We use a Fujifilm XT-1 with a Fujinon aspherical 18mm lens. Afterwards we work the pictures with Lightroom.

We chose this lens because it’s a good allrounder, light and compact but sometimes we wished to have a zoom though… other than that, great set-up! 🙂

    Dag Dimitri en Sarah,
Hoe hebben jullie Suzy daar gekregen?
    Bedankt voor de info, Sven

      Hallo Sven,

      Concrete plannen?
